5 Ways to Avoid Looking Fat After 40

!±8± 5 Ways to Avoid Looking Fat After 40

Let's face it. If you are over 40 you're probably not going to have a figure like Heidi Klum's. But, even if you do have a few boomer bulges here and there, there are ways of dressing that can actually make you look slimmer.

Here are 5 Ways to Avoid Looking Fat after 40

1. Steer clear of too many Bold Patterns.

Large, bold patterns are what's in style this summer and if you're thin as a toothpick you can pull this look off, but for boomer babes over 40 with a little bit of beef you've got to be careful or you'll look like a giant walking bolt of fabric. This is especially true for shorter full figured women who can look totally overpowered by a big print. Instead of wearing a head-to-toe pattern, try pairing a solid pant or skirt with a pattern on top. You'll still get the bold pattern vibe but you'll look much more chic.

2. Avoid Puffy Sleeves

Put a short puffy sleeve on a puffy 40+ arm and you'll end up looking like a cream puff. Not only does a sleeve like this add weight, it's a very cutesy, young look that just doesn't cut it, when you really need to look all grown-up. Puff sleeves may look delicate on the hanger, but all that gathering right at a big flabby point on your arm just adds bulk.

3. Stick to Lighter Colored Shoes

If your calves and ankles are on the heavy side and you don't want to say bye bye to dresses, then be sure to stick to lighter colored shoes. Calves and ankles look heavier in any shoe that is darker than your skin tone. Also, cute little ankle straps may be tempting this summer, but they will make your calves and ankles look like tree stumps! Large calves and ankles look slimmer when ankle straps are avoided.

4. Cool it when Combining Colors

A garden bouquet of bright bold colors is the trend this Spring. Fashionistas are mixing and matching colors creating some pretty wild combinations. But too many bright colors in one outfit can chop up your figure, making you look short and stout. Be careful not to get carried away with this color blocking trend. Instead, pick a couple of your new favorite shades and pair them with a neutral like white or taupe for a more sophisticated, streamlined look after 40.

5. Lose the Embellishment

Sometimes it's hard to resist a pretty pair of jeans with lots of detail and pretty embellishment. But, rhinestones, embroidery, fancy pockets, studs and other busy details will only emphasize a part of the body you may not want to emphasize. If you are over 40 and conscious of your middle age spread, don't point a spotlight on it by wearing jeans with fancy front pockets or an unusual waistband. If you have a little extra junk in your trunk, avoid too much embellishment around back. The simpler the better, if you don't want to draw attention to an area.

How to Wear Boots with Style

!±8± How to Wear Boots with Style

Boots are one of my favorite things about winter - once the novelty of snow and sweaters has worn off, anyway.

Boots can be practical or sexy, although rarely both in the salt-laden streets of harsh winter climates. Speaking of which...

While it may often seem like store clerks are just trying to boost their commissions by ringing up protective sprays and gels, their sales gimmick is not totally bogus.

It is essential to understand that not all boots are created equal. The word 'boot' is not synonymous with water-proof or snow-friendly. Respect your fashion investment by weather-protecting and cleaning all of your winter footwear regularly.

Realize that protective and restorative shoe applications cannot perform miracles. Have the common sense to know when to air on the side of practicality and not to wear your suede stiletto calf-cut boots. Salt and water produce damaging, lasting stains which - in addition to ruining boots' finish - actually corrode the integrity of genuine suede, leather and fabric. Purchase a swank boot bag in which to tote your trendy footwear to work in nasty winter conditions while opting for damage-proof snow or rain boots while en route.

Boot Tip: If you remember nothing else: Be seasonally consistent when putting an outfit together. Do not wear boots and a skirt with bare legs; tights, nylons, or even flesh colored fishnet stockings help bridge the (thermal & fashion) gap between your knees and your hemline.

Ankle Boots

Very funky footwear when worn with tights and a skirt. Avoid wearing ankle boots with long skirts past the knee - this tends to look frumpy and matronly.

Mid-Calf Boots

A unique cut that looks great with skirts of all lengths. This style accentuates your calf muscle and stands out from the crowd of knee-high boots. Very sexy, indeed.

Tall Boots

The classic knee-high boot. Ensure that the boot fits snugly around your leg; if the boot gapes open you may need to have it altered for a more chic look—a standard procedure at most cobblers.

Fur-Lined Boots & UGGs

Narrow, fur-lined lace-up tall boots are a sweet accompaniment to a flirty short skirt. For a funky casual style, try wearing knee socks over your tights and letting them peek (ever so slightly) over the top of your boot. This look works best if your socks and tights are contrasting colors.

UGGs have become all the rage as the surfer-type's (and urban wanna-be surfer type's) winter foot-wear of choice. These robust, wooly sheepskin boots have been fashioned for years by Australian craftsmen, and were first mass introduced to North America in 1978 by Brian Smith, a young Australian surfer seeking to spread the UGG-love across the United States.

Twenty-five years later, and while UGGs aren't exactly the height of chic sophistication or glamorous sexiness, they are hailed by wearers as the ultimate in comfort and warmth at 30 below.

Bathing Suits

!±8± Bathing Suits

Bathing suits, also known as swimsuits, are worn for many purposes. Basically, for the general public, they are meant to avoid nudity or exposure when going for a swim or sun-bathing in public places like beaches and public swimming pools. Swimmers in a competition may wear them for thermal protection, and contestants in a beauty pageant, for displaying their bodies.

It is illegal to go swimming without a bathing suit in many parts of the United States, as it is considered to be a form of indecent exposure. There are special beaches and resorts reserved for people who wish to go nude while swimming. The number of nudist beaches has risen in recent years, and their popularity is still growing.

There are many types of bathing suits available for men, women and children. Men's bathing suits may include shorts, trunks, board shorts, jammers, speedo-style briefs, thongs, or cut-off jeans. Women's bathing suits mainly consist of one-piece swimsuits, bikinis, or thongs, with variants like monokinis, tankinis and string bikinis. Beaches mostly allow pants, underwear, or T-shirts to be used as make-shift bathing suits, but swimming pools seldom do so.

Special types of bathing suits or swimsuits, usually made from spandex, are generally worn by professional swimmers. They may wear full bodysuits, racer-back styles, jammers, and racing briefs for protection from drag, skin chaffing, stings and abrasion.

There are countless types, styles, designs and variants of bathing suits that have come up in recent years, and the number and popularity of certain styles are still growing.
